May2007 at King of Kings

Dear Fellow Servants of the King of Kings,
Greetings to you in the name of our victorious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

What a joy and privilege it was to celebrate Christ's resurrection with you on Easter Sunday. It was a glorious celebration and wonderful breakfast fellowship! And, what hope we have! Oh my, how we need hope.

It was the day after Easter that the Chairman of the Transition Team was taken to eternal life. The last time Annette was in church was for Palm Sunday worship and to hear my report to the congregation. She almost made it to see the end of the Transition Team's work.

In a few weeks the work of the Transition Team will come to an end. At this time, final reports are being written, and goal suggestions are being prepared for the Church Council.

One big event involving the entire congregation is the "Service of Prayer, Repentance and Renewal" scheduled for May 2nd at 7:00 p.m. As I wrote in the last newsletter, "This service presents an opportunity for us come to the foot of the cross. It's an important piece of the transition process. It's a time to pray and to repent together so that the Spirit of Christ might enable us to change our hearts as necessary and to begin anew to seek His will."

The service which closes with the Sacrament of the Altar will have special benefit and blessing to the congregation as we then proceed with the call process. It is not mandatory that people fast before this service, however, if you are able to do so, please consider forgoing the meal before the service. Scripture contains numerous examples of fasting and prayer.

The end of the Transition Team's work will actually be recognized in a worship service later in May. I have appreciated their work; the members of the Team have been a tremendous help and encouragement to me personally, as well as to the members of the congregation.

Thanks to all of you for your participation in the questionnaires, interviews, and cottage meetings. Your input has been valuable during this process, as well as for the future ministry of the congregation. May God richly bless you and your work in His Kingdom!

Peace, joy, and love,
Pastor Schlechte
Interim Pastor

Thank You to Many
We'd like to acknowledge everyone who has gone the extra step to help out in any way around KOK: Karen S, Paula B, Stacie C and Debbie B for providing coffee treats during April. Thanks also to those who helped in any way put things back in order quickly following the Memorial Service for Annette A. All help is greatly valued. If you come to the building to do some work, please leave a note on Kathy's desk so we know who did what and when. Thank you to all who helped out in any way at KOK in April that we didn't know about; we really appreciate you!

Letter from Marcus!
Although a copy of this letter is posted at church on the bulletin board by the coffee pot, I thought you might like to read it again in your newsletter. Marcus is in his second year of seminary and we couldn't be more proud of his accomplishments. Following is Marcus' April letter:

Dear Members of King of Kings Lutheran Church,
Greetings in the name of our risen Lord Jesus Christ! After 40 days of Lent, the Church has arrived at the season of Easter. In a way, Easter seems a bit more important this year, because of all the media hype surrounding the so-called "tomb of Jesus" that was discovered. I pray that you are not troubled by these bogus claims. The same false rumors have been surrounding Jesus' resurrection since the day after it happened! Matthew records the chief priests paying off the soldiers to spread the rumor that the disciples stole the body (28:11-15), but the Truth could not be bound. As St. Paul writes in I Corinthians 15, if Christ did not rise, then our faith is in vain. But Jesus Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! So we too will be raised from the dead and live forever with Him in heaven.

The month of March saw the beginning of the Spring Quarter of studies here at the seminary. It looks as though this will be another busy quarter, but most of my time will be spent doing wedding and vicarage responsibilities. I'll have to be sure to make time to study! This quarter's classes are especially interesting. They include a class on the theology behind mission work, the theology behind preaching (a very good class so far), a class on the daily life and work of a pastor in the congregation, a class on preaching sermons (especially Old Testament, miracle, and parable texts), and a class on the history of the Lutheran church in America. It's amazing to see how far our Lutheran heritage stretches back. For example, did you know that the first Lutheran Divine Service in North America was held on a boat in Hudson Bay, Canada in 1619? Anyways, I've been working twice as hard this month to finish as much schoolwork as I can, since the month of April will be filled with other responsibilities.

The vicarage placement service will be on Monday, April 23, at 5:00 pm (Mountain). People always ask if we know ahead of time where we will go. Maybe the other seminarians have an inside source, but I'm clueless. No, as for me, I won't know until I'm standing in front of the crowded Chapel, and they announce my congregation. In the meanwhile, please keep me and the other soon-to-be vicars in your prayers, as we eagerly await our placements. Thank you again for your continued support.

In Christ,
Marcus B

A Vicarage Assignment for Marcus!
We are pleased to announce that Marcus B, son of Jim and Peggy B, has been assigned to West Portal Lutheran Church, San Francisco for the year from August 2007 to August 2008. Then he will return to the seminary for one more year of studies before being eligible for a placement call. Congratulations Marcus! May God continue to bless your service in His name!

The annual King's Choir cantata will be sung on Mother's Day, May 13th at both services. It is called Footprints in the Sand and is by Joseph Martin. We meet Saturday May 5th and 12th from 9-11 AM for rehearsals. Contact Peggy B for more information.

Beyond the Chronicle
Stay in touch with email. Many times in the church office we receive important, dated information after the monthly newsletter has been mailed. Many times information is worthy of being repeated. Pastor and/or I will send this along via an email which we're calling "Beyond the Chronicle." In order to keep from "stuffing" your mailbox, we'll keep this to once a week or less.

If you have email available but have not received a "Beyond the Chronicle" from me, please forward your email address to me and I will add you to the distribution list.

Of if you prefer or do not have email, there are always a few copies of "Beyond the Chronicle" in the yellow folder on the hanging track (near the flower chart) for you to pick up to take home and read.

Our purpose is to get more information out to the members and friends of King of Kings. Please let us know of any other way we might serve you in the way of communication.
